Lucky Friday Studios “new life” photo contest begins on February 8th, 2012. The grand prize winner will receive a complimentary maternity mini session and a newborn photo session, plus a $100 print credit and 1 digital image from each session. 1st and 2nd runner ups will each receive a complimentary mini-maternity session, 50% off a newborn session, and a $50 print credit.

Please read EVERYTHING below before you enter!  

TO ENTER 

Email a photo of you along with a written sentiment to the new life you’ve created... it could be a wish or a dream that you have for your new little one or a message of love... to kami@luckyfridaystudios.com. The message may in some way be in the photo itself if you like or simply included in the email to be used as a caption for the photo. Creativity is always encouraged but not required! Family members are welcome to be included in the photo. Please include “new life photo contest” in the subject line of your email and include your name, city of residence, due date & the sex of the baby if known (and you are willing to share) in your message. *Please do not submit photos on the Lucky Friday Studios Facebook page.

Photos will be accepted from Wednesday, February 8th until Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012 at Midnight, MST. NO professional photography photos are allowed in the contest.

IMPORTANT DETAILS 

The winning sessions must be held at a location within the Metro Denver area. Travel fees may apply depending on location. Sessions will be scheduled according to availability. Newborn session must take place within 14 days of birth.

HOW PHOTOS WILL BE JUDGED

All entries will be uploaded into the album ‘new life photo contest’ no later than Thursday, February 23rd, on the Lucky Friday Studios Facebook fan page. In order for votes to count, voters will need to click ‘like’ for both the Lucky Friday Studios page and for the photo they are voting for. The photo with the most ‘likes’ will be the grand prize winner. Voters may only vote once per photo, but may vote for more than one photo.  Voting will close Wednesday, February 29th, 2012 at 11:59 PM, MST. Official winner will be notified and announced no later than Wednesday, March 7th, 2012.

Each January I find myself reflecting on the past year and re-establishing my goals... for both myself and for my photography. Even though this is only my third year in business, it feels especially important to me this time around. I feel like I've been caught up in a race to become successful. The funny thing is, I wasn't really in a race with anyone but myself. As a photographer, we sometimes make the mistake of comparing ourselves to other photographers. Although I find an immense source of inspiration from following other photographers, comparing myself to them can sometimes make me question if I'm good enough at what I do. After taking a hard look back at my work from 2011 I've realized that there is no reason to compare myself to anyone... because there is only one me. I'm proud of how far I've come and I never want to stop growing as a person or as an artist. I have very big, very special dreams for where my business will go in the future and complete confidence that I will achieve those dreams. But what really matters on the way to reaching my goals is that I've created images that my clients cherish.

Part of my growth as an artist this year is going to include stepping outside of my comfort zone... to that place where they say the "magic" happens. I've gotten a reputation for loving color images and I've come to realize that part of why that happened is because I've never really felt that black and white was my strength. So today I put together a small collection of black a white images from last year. Some you may have seen before in their color version, some have never been shared with anyone outside of the family they were created for. Doing this showed me that not only do I really adore some of these black and whites, but that my very favorite images make me feel something. They portray quiet, intimate moments and special connections. They are simple. This year it is my goal to take more time for the quiet moments. To do my best to capture more than just a picture of a family, but to capture the love within a family. To push myself to a place I've never gone before. I can't wait to find out what lies ahead and what incredible love I will find along the way.

I can NOT say enough nice things about this family! I met Alyson when I replied to her ad on Craigslist and she and Josh became our Denver landlords. What a lucky day that was! Not only did she graciously let me, my husband, our two year old, two dogs and a cat (yikes!) move into one of her rentals mid-month, but she has introduced me to more new clients and friends here in Denver than I can count at this point. This family is just amazing... down to earth, kind, loving, fun, and generous. I'm so incredibly happy to know you all! xoxo - k

Having barely survived taking care of one little boy (he he!), I have nothing but respect for parents of twins! These little girls are so sweet, though, I think they are going to be pretty easy! I had so much fun getting to know this family and the girls were SO good for us! I got some beautiful shots in the fall colors and as you can tell from the last photo, they were so tuckered out from all of the modeling that I got to sneak in one of them sleeping in mom and dad's arms! This is our ADORABLE little cousin! I was so excited when we realized that Lisa, Matt and Rowan would be visiting Denver right after we moved to town! We found some time before they had to head back to Minnesota to sneak in some photos of the little guy. We had so much fun taking photos and catching up. And I'm SO happy to announce that the family is moving back to Denver next summer! Matt was in town interviewing when we took these photos and has since accepted a position with Kaiser! YAY!!! We are so proud of you, Matt, and can't wait to have you here!

Here is another part of the amazing James family! We headed out to a few different areas of James Ranch for Justin, Cindy and Ethan. It was the perfect time of the year to get shots with the beautiful flowers in their gardens - check out those sunflowers!!! I'm so lucky to call these people my friends. This was my first experience on a real working ranch with part of the James family and I had a blast! We wandered out into the fields so we could include some of the four legged family members in the shoot too (those are some of the James Ranch dairy cows)! If you've never had the pleasure of visiting James Ranch - you seriously HAVE to go! Here is a link to their website for more information... James Ranch. Hands down - these are two of the sweetest kids EVER! I've been lucky enough to get to take photos a few different times with them... their parents are some of our best friends in Durango and they star in their dad's real estate ads! It's been amazing to watch them grow and change before my eyes - I remember the night Sofia was born and the first time I held her (insert teary eyes here!). So I'm only about 6 months behind on blogging, but I'm committed to catching up! I can't think of a better way to kick off a blogging marathon than with this family. I seriously LOVE them! Joan is such a sweet and fun woman and she has some amazing kids and grandkids. This was the first time that she was able to get photos with everyone in town and I feel so blessed that I was the one who got the honor! It feels like I waited forever for this beautiful little lady to make her appearance... but she was SO worth the wait! I met her parents months ago when I did their maternity photos and we instantly hit it off... they are so sweet and so much fun to work with! I was beyond excited to get to do photos with them again once their daughter was born! And miss Ella didn't disappoint me... she was a perfect little subject and she even gave me a gorgeous smile just as we were wrapping things up! The last image is of Ella on a stunning quilt that a family friend made for her... I love it when I can incorporate personal items into a newborn session to make things even more special! I hope you guys love what I got!

parker's lucky day - newborn session

There is something SO amazing about photographing my friend's and their little ones. My session with adorable little Parker and his GORGEOUS mama was no exception. He was an absolute angel for me! I was so honored to be able to to both maternity photos and newborn photos for baby number 2. Since I didn't even own my equipment when Lindsay and I went through our first pregnancies together 2 1/2 years ago it was so special to be able to capture these images of her second time around. Welcome to the world, sweet Parker... you are one lucky little boy with an awesome big brother and two of the most wonderful parents a baby could ask for. I can't wait to watch you grow up (just not too fast okay?)!

OH MY... I predicted that little Morgan would be beautiful but I had no idea just HOW beautiful she would be! I can't even begin to tell you how amazing it is to get to do a maternity session, get to be friends with your clients, and then get to do a newborn session with their precious new family! To be able to document this moment in time... to capture teeny tiny fingers and toes... and to witness the overwhelming amount of love that parents have for their babies is just about the coolest thing ever. This was my first session in my very own newborn studio too - which makes it even more special for me. Wendy and John - thank you for trusting me with Morgan's first photo shoot! I can't wait to watch her grow and change... I have a feeling that she is going to get more gorgeous by the day...

This is my GORGEOUS friend Melissa and her family. Okay - I guess it's pretty obvious that they are all gorgeous! One of my favorite things about living in Durango is having friends like Melissa and Jason. Even though it is hard to find the time to get together often, it is such a blast when we do. We've gone from some wild nights on the town (before we had our little ones) to chasing kids around at each others houses together and I've loved every minute of it! These are our friends Tim and Anna and their dog Toast. They are some of our favorite friends here in Durango so when they asked me to do a family session for them I knew we would have a blast. Their sweet boy Toast was diagnosed with Lymphoma recently and we wanted to make sure that we got a lot of great shots with him. He is, after all, part of the family. After two days of getting snowed out we finally found a beautiful spring afternoon for our session. Tim and Anna are so obviously in love with each other (and with Toast) and we got some great images. I hope you guys had as much fun as I did.

I had SO much fun photographing Wendy and John... not to mention their sweet dog Bear! Are they one gorgeous couple or what?! They have such great senses of humor and their love for each other is obvious as soon as you see them together. They are expecting their first child, a daughter, in June. Announcing my Canvas Display Guide and SALE!!!

It seems like more and more of my clients are struggling with figuring out how to display their favorite images from their session and I have finally found a way to help them out! My new canvas and print wall display guide creates an example of what an amazing impact your enlargements can have in your space. I can customize the templates to show you what it would look like to display between 1-12 of your images as canvases (or framed prints if you prefer) of various sizes. I'm a really visual person and I think this is such an amazing way for you to really see what a canvas or enlargement is going to look like on a wall before you invest in it. lucky friday studios will finally have... a studio!

It's never been a secret that one of my first goals for lucky friday studios was to actually have a studio. I'm so excited to announce that I will be opening a natural light studio for newborn sessions in the next few weeks!

I ADORE newborn sessions. It is truly one of the greatest honors to photograph brand new babies. Now I can give my clients the added bonus of being able to come to a studio for their session. Everyone will finally have access to my entire collection of props and I can guarantee that there will always be great natural light and a comfortable, warm space for the shoot. Having a permanent space for all of my newborn equipment will also mean less time transporting and setting up... which means more time doing what I love - getting beautiful shots of your precious little one!

I already have lots of newborns scheduled for this summer but there is space for a few more. If you are interested in booking a session, please contact me with your due date so that I can get you on my schedule. I recommend that newborn sessions take place by the time your baby is 10 days old.

Although my studio will be exclusively for newborn sessions to begin, I plan on expanding to accommodate all of my sessions in the future!

lindsay's lucky day - maternity session

Lindsay was one of the first real friends I made after we moved to Durango. We were lucky enough to have our babies just a couple of weeks apart. Now Linds is getting ready to have her 2nd little boy. I didn't own my camera equipment the first time she was pregnant so I am thrilled that I am able to photograph her this time... and precious baby #2 in a few weeks! I missed my chance to have maternity photos done when I was pregnant with Braylon so I have to admit that I'm a little jealous that I don't have images like this of myself. You look beautiful Linds! I hope you love your images!

Someone very wise said to me recently that "your blog is your voice"...

That someone was Audrey Woulard. I just returned from one of her photography workshops in Chicago. She is known for being one of most sought after children's photographers in the country... maybe the world. And even though I've been in business for over a year now, I somehow feel like things are just beginning for me after my weekend with her. So I'm finally starting a blog of my own. It's time for me to be able to share a bit more about what goes on behind the scenes here at lucky friday studios.

I've been in love with Audrey's work since the first time I saw it. When the opportunity came up for me to attend a workshop at her natural light studio in Chicago I couldn't be more excited. Now that I'm home and I've had a little bit of time to process everything from the experience I realize that the workshop didn't go the way I expected it to... it was so much more than I ever could have hoped for. Audrey is so generous with her knowledge and she is such an amazing role model. Her family comes first - always. She has held true to her values and still manages to run a wildly successful business in the meantime. I think one of the most amazing things about her though is her ability to guide each individual photographer toward their own goals. She really took the time to help each person learn how to become the kind of photographer that they want to be while staying true to themselves.

There were 10 women at our workshop and I believe what Audrey said about us. We were a very unique and special group. We came from all over North America and we bonded immediately. I feel so lucky to have made such wonderful friends and I can't wait to see how each of us grows. I hope that everyone walked away from this experience insanely excited about what their future holds. I know I did! It was truly an honor to be a part of such an amazing group of women.
